what we're about

three brothers

We're Ewan, Jamie and Lachlan Maclean, three brothers from Edinburgh. In 2020, having never rowed seriously before, we rowed the Atlantic, broke three world records and raised over £200,000 for charity. That crossing showed us what a hard physical challenge with a purpose could do, and in 2023 we set up The Maclean Foundation.

In 2025 we rowed the full Pacific, from Peru to Australia, non-stop and unsupported: 139 days and 9,753 miles, a world first. Along the way we raised over £1 million for clean water projects in Madagascar through The Maclean Foundation and our partner charity, Feedback Madagascar. Three Brothers in a Boat, published by Canongate in September 2026, is the story of how.

charity efforts

The Maclean Foundation

We set up The Maclean Foundation in 2023 with a focus on clean water.

Clean water is the most basic human necessity on the planet, yet 10% of people worldwide don't have access to it.

The impact from our Pacific row is being delivered through our trusted partner charity, Feedback Madagascar (SC023568). Our focus is cantilever and gravity fed borehole systems in communities living on the edges of the south-east rainforest corridor.

£1m will bring change not just at community level; it will bring structural change to this entire region. Only around one in ten people in rural Madagascar has safely managed drinking water (WHO/UNICEF, 2024). We're doing something to change that.

Ewan Maclean

OLDEST brother

After nearly a decade at Dyson, Ewan left his career to return to Scotland and become a full-time brother. Was it a mistake? Having since spent 139 days in a 28-foot boat with the other two, he has had plenty of time to think about it.

Ewan Maclean

OLDEST brother

Ewan is an engineer at Dyson. He invents things that don't yet exist. He's in charge of all electronics and tech aboard our boat.

Jamie Maclean

MIDDLE brother

Jamie runs a small design and build practice in Glasgow. He's fascinated with how things are designed, made, how things can be improved.

Lachlan Maclean

Lachlan has a background in philosophy and currently manages The Maclean Foundation. The mediator of the brothers, he keeps the ship steady on its course.
